This may be true to some degree it is harder to meet true friends in any big city. However, I disagree that one cannot meet the right friends here at all. Anyone who thinks this way should go back to where they came from.
I believe it is all depends on your approach. If the search is center around bars like may of us do, that is the worst possible place to concentrate your effort in. It could happen, but never the best place by any means.
This acquaintance I encountered, interested in only what he wanted, in his mine of a perfect friend and partner, but never ask himself if he is also a perfect ten in the eye of his prospect too? Definitely no Casanova, and a little self center as well.
He announced that he got approached a lot in bars. Unfortunately from what I saw those are mostly undesirable individuals, searching for desperate companies, on a lonely weekend out in the town. I suppose there is nothing wrong with it unless you are looking for a one nightstand.
More importantly I realized when ask this acquaintance of his hobby or interests, he can’t provide a straightforward answer for a single activities that he can share with a group of people. In a city like New York, there are many opportunities to meet up with a group of people to peruse a common interest. Like arts and culture, or restaurants and food, outdoor activities or even shopping, there must be something he could enjoy doing with a group of people. At least that is the first step towards meeting quality friends, instead of hoping to meet “a person” he have nothing in common with, other than his obsession of their physical beauty. That is a lost course.
However, I am no authority on this subject, I made a lot of quality friends in the city, I will no longer extend a helping hand in his matter any further, because it landed me on the wrong place even with the right heart. To be true to my principle, it is really not important to have these kinds of negative influences in my life either way. Who have time for that.
What do you think? Care to share your thoughts.

A brighter forecast
I wrote on my blog yesterday:
“ I believe mood is created by what you experiencing at a particular place and time in your life, weather as a media, helps intensify it in either ways.“
I stood by what I wrote. The sky may be a little brighter today, but the weather is still miserable. The snow still falling non-stop, the city is nothing but a dirty wet mess. None of these matters, the miserable gray mess huffing over my heart for the last two days, had been lifted this morning. All I left feeling is rainbow and sunshine, blue birds and puffy white clouds. Even the razor sharp wind fells like gentle summer breeze. White snow left on every rooftops, and treetops, is surreal and magic, a perfect picture in my mind. Oh let’s me dance in the snow to the music of the city, under the bright light of Broadway with arm stretch out wide…
I only have myself to blame that led me into the downward emotional spiral. There was no communication break down nor break up, just a flu that grounded all correspondences. My trust and love is not in vein after all.
From here on our future looks much brighter. Stay tune. To some weather may still alter mood, but it is not the only factor after all.
My sincere thanks for all the concern emails; thanks for reading my blog.

Can Weather Affect Moods
I believe mood is created by what you experiencing at a particular place and time in your life, weather as a media helps intensify it in either ways.
Presently I can’t affix my anxiety and depression to the absolutely ghastly weather; even it is gray, chill and rainy, outside with the warning of an impending wet snowstorm. It is just my state of mine in this moment in time affecting me deeply.
Just when all seems well with my recent romantic relationship, even with promises of a future meeting soon on the distance shore, all communication came to an abrupt end, before the memories fade. Not sure what had happened, there was neither indication nor signs. Change of mind perhaps, my worst fear is rather mishaps happened.
The silence and unknown consumed my entire being, and restless nights, replaced the sweet dreams still linger. When I left with holding the candles in the dark, cling on hope that there are explanations for all these craziness, in reality I am gradually coming to a waking point to accept the fact that I may never know the story.
My friends told me it is a bad idea to hang on. Leaving the chapter without an ending and the possibility of a loving relationship is even harder to let go. Distorted and unsettled, just like waking up from a nightmare.
“Head out; tomorrow is another day.” Even though I am not willing to leave my sweetest memories behind, I may have no choice. Tell me I am a romantic. Well that is why there are many love stories still waiting to be told.
Thanks for reading. Grant me a pray, still cling on and hoping.

Comments on an interview
I stumble across an article to day on a non-eventful day, and was surprise by what I read.
During a design Magazine interview. The young hot owners of one of the top interactive design firm in Europe said that “There are no superstar designer in the US; designers are just doing their business. When American designers come to Croatia, they are met by TV and media asking for an interview–they are stunned!”
I will too. American designers are not use to spot light. Most top designers are not well known outside of our industries. We are happy doing our own thing, and praise God that we have such a fulfilling job, doing what we love, that is more than enough. We don’t need media, or fame.
However I did pause and wonder what life would be like, if I were working in Europe. Never the less, I have no regret working in the Big Apple. Our works are still the best in the world.
They also said that: “New York is the only place in America that I feel I could live in. Everyone speak funny English, you don’t feel like a stranger there, it’s totally free.”
I am glad that they like to live in NY even though they miss the media attention. Secondly, I wonder where did they hang out while they were here. Although majority of us do have some kind of accent, myself included, I don’t think that is majority of New Yorkers speak funny English. U.S. is a melting pot and NYC is at the forefront of it all. I am glad they feel the pro side of having in flux of people living in the same city, that is exactly why we love our city too.
In the end I am still curious what a superstar designer’s life overseas is like. Most importantly does it come with a hefty paycheck?

Broadway Going Gay
Tuesday Front page NY Times “ New gay shows on Broadway” followed by a half page article on Page 3. I suppose that is good publicity for the new show. What I wonder is what is the fuss.
Gay shows been on the main steam on TV since the 90’s no one make a fuss about it. It is pure entertainment. May be because the theatre industry that is mainly supported by gays finally put their story onto the spot lighted center stage?
Is gay life or love really that different than any others? Do they not have the same set of problems, or similarly under the same oppression and discrimination like any minority groups?
As the critic wrote: These shows are “ Personal, Not Political” My friend characterizes these new shows, as “Gay Gap Theatre. Completely normal and inoffensive”. Built for straight audiences.
Some shows sounded interesting like “ Yanks” Next Fall, and The Pride” but it is all about the same old boring love story. There suppose to be more show about Gay marriage and gay adoption this fall. I am not sure that is something I even wanted to see.
I have not been to any of these show, I reserve my opinion for now. I am surprise that this is such a big news that appeared on the front page of NY Times. What about coverage of my Friends production of 101 Dalmatians. I am not kidding. It is on its way to Broadway, with real puppy. Already open in Madrid and Chicago.

New York Cab Share
New York You did it again, more outrageous idea to easy traffic congestion. Instead of come up with through idea. Our Taxi and Limo commission (TLC) just try to pluck holes, and ripe us off along the way. The latest idea of Cab sharing is one of the most stupid ideas. (PEROID).
In case you have not heard. Starting this coming Friday, Taxi from three stops along Park Ave will be picking up multiple passengers going same direction, drop them off at various point and you share fare. How does that works, no one know yet.
I took a taxi to get somewhere because I had emergency. I do not want my Taxi turn into a Mini cab that stop at every corner to drop off passengers. If I am going to take a Taxi, I don’t care if I can save myself $3 a trip that I can’t even pay for my double cheese big Mac for lunch. Especially you ran into Passenger that take their sweet time to get out of the cab, or those have no cash had to pay with credit card. God help me.
After the MTA told us there will be another fare hike, now the TLC came up with this. What else is next? What happen to my voice as a passenger? Can I flat out refuse to share ride at the three dedicated locations? If I do, they charge me for multiple fares? We already pay for waiting time if the Cab got stuck in traffic. All these agencies are very creative on coming up with ideas to ripe off passengers, except a real idea to solve the traffic problem.
I got an idea here. How about Capitalize Manhattan by ban all Cars passing thru the city, only public transport is allowed. I am not going to laugh too loud about that; it may be reality soon.

Friendship.
If you are a skeptic about love in first sight, I think you may change your mind as I have if it happened to you. The arrow of St. Valentine had stroked me recently. It was sweet while it lasted; the hurt on the other hand is unbearable. I can’t recognize myself anymore.
Therefore on this beautiful Sunday afternoon I am mourning alone on my misfortune. Why does two people that is so perfect for each other, had to be separate by a vast ocean between them. That is the story for another blog when I am ready.
What surprises me through all these was so many of my friends were concern of my well being that emails and phone calls are pouring in, even from friends that are on the other side of the globe. That is absolutely amazing; I knew they are good friends, just not knowing the love they had for me. With everyone leading a busy life in the city; taking time to call and invite me to join them just to make sure that I am not sinking into a deep depression alone is a little out of character. Realizing these friendships are more than skin deep impresses me, and I feel blessed.
Perhaps genuine friendship in the Big Apple do exists some times. It is not all fun and games. By nature, the definitions of good friends do not change, even in a place like New York, shattered the mirth that New Yorkers are everyone for themselves.
Next time when you have a crisis I hope you have friends like mine.

Freedom to Create Prize
Went to a moving show at the Ana Tzarev gallery. It was one show that affected me more than any of the recent show I visited. The imagery were powerful and moving, almost as soon as I walk into the gallery I can help but inspire by the powerful works.
The message “finding light in darkness and courage in truth” came loud and clear in the works. The artists have the risk of possible body harm to embrace the freedom of expression, and bring their visions thru their art to the rest of the world. By doing so collectively they presented a body of works that highlights injustice, battles discrimination and repression from some of the darkest region on earth. Their bravery should be honored.
Some of the imageries were disturbing, while others let their emotion flow from their canvas to your heart. I was deeply touched.
It is an unusual show. Check out their site at my link.

Food deals everywhere you turn
I thought restaurant week was over, that is apparently not so. You can still found the same price fixed meals offer during restaurant week in some of the more upscale places in town.
I knew most of us are cutting back on spending and slim down on the waste line, however with deal like $35 for a prime rib with all the trimmings and desert plus dinner at the infamous oak room how can I resists even if you are on the unemployment lines.
Perhaps little treats can help brighten an otherwise dull gray out looks in the morning. One word of advice is making sure you ask if the special is still on while making your reservation. I hate to see your evening end in washing dishes in the kitchen, if that course is still offered. Secondly, cut down on your wine consumptions. It could be costly. Plus don’t forget the poor waiter’s 20% tips. They are struggling just like you.
There are many other first rated restaurants offering the same specials until the end of the month. Of course I will be a little out of shape by the time it is all over. Take advantage of it, I guarantee you that it is good for the waistline, besides what is wrong on gaining a few extra pounds anyway. It is still winter, put on a heavy coat in disguise. Plus, a few extra pounds in the eyes of your prospective employer meaning you are not that desperate yet.
A little care free, live for today and have faith that tomorrow will take care of itself. The Sun does rises from the east everyday, even in a cloudy day. Live a little even on a cloudy day that is my philosophy.

More hike on the subway.
What is wrong with this picture here with the public transport system in NYC?
We are being held hostage here. There is talk on the news of another rate hike this coming summer or next year. Didn’t we just have our fare increased to $2.25 per ride? It seems to me that this will never end. Cost increase is inevitable in the real world due to inflation, however there ought to be some ways that MTA in NYC can turn a profit.
The most obvious solution is to clean up the station and start selling ad spaces. What about adopt a station or a car. In that case you can cut maintenance cost, cleaner station and may even turn a profit, up grade the technology, give us a count down clock that we desperately needed.
Fare increase is only lead to reduce ridership. If I can save $0.50-$0.75 every time I take a walk for a couple of blocks to my next destination. I will. Get some exercise into it at the same time.
Therefore if the MTA don’t stop this nonsense, and look for a real solution, you are hanging yourself by the neck. Fare hike, Bridge tolls etc are not permanence solution. Fare and taxing hike in general is never a good idea. Is the Boston tea party lesson not in your textbook? Frustrated.

How wrong was I before
For years, we fell into the trap of Valentines Day ritual and went bankrupt over it. We had no choice but to go with the flow, or we will be in the doghouse for weeks or may be even months “alone” on the couch.
However during this economic time, I discover the secret of romance is simplicity. A first Valentine with my special someone normally is a bouquet of roses, an expensive night out, may be even more gifts. Break the bank, and may not be memorable.
Instead, a date navigates thru the halls of the famed Metropolitan museum at ease can easily impress your date, also allows you to make observation if you are dating some one have their own point of view or just agreeing with you.
Dressing smartly always gets extra points. Just make sure the focus is on your date. Window-shopping down Madison ave, and dinner at neighborhood restaurant not only saves you money, it allows you to have most time together. Even just a warm cup of chocolate in a snowy winter afternoon, makes you appears to be more creative, sensitive, and therefore a more desirable partner to your date, granted if you do not get lost trying to find your way around.
At least these are my experience, and I had one of my best Valentines ever. Care to share yours.

Why are we obsessed with birthday Parties
Birthday. Americans always made a big fuss over their birthdays. It is a cute thing to do while you are a child. A chance to get more devoted love from you parents or just the gifts. May be just being reminded that they still remember that you are their child.
For grown ups; if it is a milestone birthday I suppose it is worth celebrating. Making a big fuss over birthdays years after years at the office is absurd. Besides who wants to be reminded that you are one year closer to retirement, and someone younger is waiting on the wing to take your place with lower pay.
It is such a bother for colleagues being selected to wasted countless office hours to create a custom birthday card for you that you are going to put it to the recycle shredder as soon as you are back to your office. What a waste of time and talent.
I often suspected office birthday party is just a scheme some one dreams up just for the opportunity to get a “FREE” slice of the sugar fill cake. As for others, I am sure they have better things to do at their coffee break than singing birthday song. No wonders some office no longer allow write off birthday cake expenses.
Ah, everyone wants to know how old you are during the get together. Isn’t it a private matter? Especially in the youth obsess culture like the ours.
Perhaps, I am wrong. May be birthday should be remembered or perhaps I am the only one not too kin on the idea of making a big fuss on the “special date” that happens on a 365 days cycle. The idea of every birthday passes, it on step closer for being obsolete from the work force, is not worth making a big fuss over. What about you?

American Idol my turn?
Not into fame, nor I ever care to watch the infamous show. However I do give the show credit for discovered many young talents for the music industries, otherwise is an impossible fortress for young talent to penetrate.
Although I never be Susan Boyle, or Paul Potts, very little of you even know that I actually sing. Have never been caught death at a Karaoke, grab on the microphone and refuse to let go either. I do sit close by the choir during Sunday services, singing my heart out. But that is only to express my devotion to my Lord. Little did not know that caught the attention of the Choir members. (I must be really loud). To my surprise someone approach me to join the choir. They told me that I have a beautiful voice. Isn’t it all started like a lot of the greatest singers? Religious service and Choir are their training ground?
Never the less, I am not ready to give up my career running off to chase the rainbow. I politely declined their invitation. The point is there are opportunities abound, I will never know what my next encounter may very well be a life changing opportunity, or may be just another lesson to be learn.

The unexpected does happen
Just when it is least expected the most unexpected happened. Have faith in life and believe. When it does, it strikes without warning, without expectations or anticipations, is the most wonderful thing to experience. For some one like me, that plans every detail in my life, this is the most rewarding experience I ever had.
Over the weekend, the highly anticipated blizzard never touched the city. I waited up till dawn expecting the storm that felt short for about 10 miles south. This is just the first of my many unexpected experience for the weekend. Then it was the Saints as an underdog, came out as the shining new star in the Super Bowl.
The biggest unexpected events happened when an exploration date turns out to be an experience from hell, before I even have the time for the self-pity, from the most likely place at the most unexpected moment, some one feel so right fill in the void.
It seems surreal that it all happens so fast, there is no hasty passion, but stimulating conversation, wishing the enchanting evening would never end. The reality is that party never last forever. A phone call wishes of good night after we parted. Ensure that we will meet again.
I have not felt this way in years. Did the arrow of St Valentine finally strike my frozen heart? Or is it another one of those casual encounters in the big city remain to be seen.

Speed dating anyone?
As Valentine’s Day approaching, can’t help but wonder what happen to my Valentine. It was a non-subject while I was younger. On the other hand, can’t blame anyone but myself, I was most readily to give up a relationship for career move regardless thru the years.
These days however, I saw friends are happily married. May be it is about time to take the subject more seriously. I don’t meant marriage, just “A” steady friend that “Lives” in the same city?
Dating is never easy. It is not about I can’t charm my way into a date, nor making a commitment, nor I am chop liver material at the bottom of the heap. It is the up keep afterward. It seems easy enough to say that I will make time if it is important in my life. May be that was never a priority? Because my excuse is that I am too busy and have better things to do. I still denied that as a commitment issue. Rather. I have not met my true soul mate.
Recently I had this crazy idea of participating in a speed dating. I never took this approach seriously. If I cannot meet one person out of the hundreds that I met in a month, what in the world I can meet one in just about 8 dates at 5 minutes of conversation each. Never the less I sign up, and invited other friends to join me for support. It was actually fun. I did not make a match, but I actually made an interesting friend. Will I do it again? You bet I will. The excitement of anticipation alone is worth the trouble.
There you have it. Just another spontaneous thing that I do in the city, with no expectation, I will never be disappointed. Oh God. Please send me one date. Keep smiling.

New York City Subway
I have a thought this morning on my way to work.
Have you “EVER” stop and take in the surroundings in the subway station/platform? The picture is rather revolting. Paint is peeling off the ceiling. Layers of dirt had replaced the color of paint. Water gush out of the wall and roof every time it rains. The floor were never wash, trashcans were full. Not to mention the noise generated by the train grinding on the track, it is unbearably hot in the summer, more like a sauna than subway platform. Huh, please don’t forget our subway pets. We saw those rats walking up and down the track without fear. They provided us with rather exciting entertainments, while we lean half way out into the track to see if we can catch a glimpse of the headlight on the approaching train. Since we cannot afford to provide computerize time clock to let us know how long we have to wait for the next train. We have to settle for the entertainment staring "Rats".
I took rides in many subway systems around the globe, there is none compare to the desolate conditions as the New York City transit system. Other countries take pride on their public transits. Their system may not be as massive and effective as ours, but for the most part is clean. In some countries it is a pleasurable experience to be going underground. I feel like I am in a war zone every time I am there, especially now that there are increasing numbers and visibility of the transit police.
I know upgrade and clean up are all possible, even if it is cosmetic? At least it will make us feel a little better of our transit system, which is a famed NY landmark, instead of a relic of the past technology. Care to comments.

Jokes by email
How many of us hate junk mail, chain mail, etc as much as telemarketing?
Unfortunately some of our friends doesn’t seems to understand we do not want that kind of mail come into our mail box.
Unless you want to delete your friend’s contact, you left with little choice to defend yourself. Not open their mail, or just take the chance to ignore them.
However, I receive an interesting explanation yesterday I love to share it with all of you:
“When you are very busy, and have nothing to say but still want to keep in touch, guess what you do? You forward jokes.
When you have something to say, but don't know what, and don't know how, you forward jokes.
Also to let you know that you are still remembered, you are still important, you are still loved, and you are still cared for. Guess what you get? A forwarded joke.
So, next time if you get a joke, don't think that you've been sent just another forwarded joke, but that you've been thought of today and your friend on the other end of your computer wanted to send you a smile.”
With that said, I am in a lost. When my friends hit the forward button on the keyboard, Are they really thinking of me, or...
I am neutral on the subject. What about you?

Art Critique, why do we care?
Critique can be both constructive and destructive. I came across an article on the late work of Pierre-Auguste Renoir recently, can’t help but wonder should it matter what the critic think of your work, as long as your work had a vision?
It is never easy to create art. We dream of success, and most importantly understood. When it is not, in the case like Renoir, even with his acclaimed success in his early years as a pioneer of Impressionism; critical opinion of critics that do not understand can be a destructive force.
I am also toying with the idea of a new painting style for my art for over a year. Time after time I keep fallen back into the old style. Perhaps it is the comfort zone. However if it took Renoir 40 years to declare he finally master his late works. I should have no complains. It is good to know even the master took a long time to experiment.
His determination is much to be admired.

Why travel
I am back after the absences of a few days. On this bitter cold weekend, I had some relaxing time to watch the tube, and come across a very interesting quote:
“ Some people are content staying in one place in an existence of a living dead, while others spend their life traveling in search of life.” This may not be the exact quote from Marco Polo, but that is his philosophy while writing his memoir of his journey.
Our travel makes a lot easier these days; it is hard to imagine a lot of us have no interests of traveling far to enrich our understanding of other cultures still. You may argue that we are armchair travelers; we can see the world in the comfort of our own home. Unless I am home bound with no alternatives, I can never stop traveling, a passion that I had since childhood. Besides being in a real place to touch and to feel a certain place can never be replace by virtual reality.
I have never read the journal of Marco Polo; it is on my reading list. I hope I will get to it in the very near future.
Get out and travel.
