Art Critique, why do we care?

Critique can be both constructive and destructive. I came across an article on the late work of Pierre-Auguste Renoir recently, can’t help but wonder should it matter what the critic think of your work, as long as your work had a vision?

It is never easy to create art. We dream of success, and most importantly understood. When it is not, in the case like Renoir, even with his acclaimed success in his early years as a pioneer of Impressionism; critical opinion of critics that do not understand can be a destructive force.

I am also toying with the idea of a new painting style for my art for over a year. Time after time I keep fallen back into the old style. Perhaps it is the comfort zone. However if it took Renoir 40 years to declare he finally master his late works. I should have no complains. It is good to know even the master took a long time to experiment.

His determination is much to be admired.
