New Yorkers often experienced the majestic scenery of the Northern Hudson River shore, but often over look the beauty of the mid Manhattan Hudson River waterfront. The stretch from Midtown west go south and end at the southern tip of Battery Park.
Unless you live in neighborhoods in the mid to lower section of the Island, most almost never set foot on the Hudson River Park. Let’s face it, it is not exactly the friendliest destination, a rather long hike from 8 or 9 Ave. Some of us just don’t bother. What is there any way? Some may proclaim.
For the fortunate few that live in these neighborhoods, the riverfront is a piece of heaven in the concrete jungle. Have a picnic, take a walk, ride your bike, or a short jog, uninterrupted. At the same time, soak in the view of a setting sun, is both romantic, poetic and exhilarating.
You may prefer the sun set lawn, have a Martini, watch the sun goes down behind our Lady Liberty at the lower tip of Manhattan. The different is, you have to share you private moment with hundreds of tourist, and other residences that live in the infamous Battery Park.
I love an early morning jog down this stretch of the park, before the city return to full swing, although the sound of traffic of the West Side highway is never far away; there are pockets of completed Hudson River Project, can shelter you from the noise of those passing cars.
To be able to listen to the sound of waves hit the rocks and piers is an authentic New York experience at its finest form. Dash to the tip of the pier, stretch out your arms, let the morning wind swept thru your face, and let your hair blow in the wind, all the while taking in the smelt of fresh river water, close your eyes forget that you are in the city for a moment, is the most precious gift on any given morning. Until you were awoke by giant of a cruise ship, bath in the golden morning sun, sailing up stream passes you by. Even that, is a fest for the eyes.
Slow down your life; take a walk on the west side river front.
