New Yorker with the infamous grocery brown bag, the bags are not all brown any more, but we still see New Yorkers with grocery bag in hand after work.
That is because if you live in Manhattan. Most of us do not have a car. Even if we do have one, the few full service grocery stores available on the island are usually out of the way. That means loading up once a week with grocery is out of the question.
However that is also the reason that made our grocery shopping a unique experience. A friend of mine just move to Manhattan recently told me that he had so much to do on any given nights, was too tire to even go shopping. He chooses to go on line to grocery shop, never mind dragging those bags home, while that may be a convenience way to get your grocery done, but missed out on the grocery shopping experience, that is all New York.
We do not just shop to buy food. We buy to enjoy the experience. We eat out on an average 6-8 times a week. We can take left over home, or order take out, there is really no need to grocery shop. However, when we do, we usually go the distance to get just the best the city had to offer. You may have your favorite bakery in midtown, cheese shop in Soho, Your butcher may be in the Upper Eastside, and for vegetables you may prefer to go to a farmer’s Marker. How can you get a grocery list accomplish in one single trip. The fact is you don’t.
On the other hand, most of us do not purchase large quantities of food at one time because we do not have room in the freezer, after that gallon of ice cream, vodka, and ice for our cocktails, there is little place for food. That’s why it seems like to do our shopping everyday,
Most people in other country do it, why are we the only one doing it more often than people live in other city? Do you want your food fresh?
Most people from the outside may think we are wasting a lot of time fussing over food. The facts we just make a short stop on our way home. No fuss at all. Next time when you are visiting NY, try the New Yorker ways of shopping. You will like it.
