I stumble across an article to day on a non-eventful day, and was surprise by what I read.
During a design Magazine interview. The young hot owners of one of the top interactive design firm in Europe said that “There are no superstar designer in the US; designers are just doing their business. When American designers come to Croatia, they are met by TV and media asking for an interview–they are stunned!”
I will too. American designers are not use to spot light. Most top designers are not well known outside of our industries. We are happy doing our own thing, and praise God that we have such a fulfilling job, doing what we love, that is more than enough. We don’t need media, or fame.
However I did pause and wonder what life would be like, if I were working in Europe. Never the less, I have no regret working in the Big Apple. Our works are still the best in the world.
They also said that: “New York is the only place in America that I feel I could live in. Everyone speak funny English, you don’t feel like a stranger there, it’s totally free.”
I am glad that they like to live in NY even though they miss the media attention. Secondly, I wonder where did they hang out while they were here. Although majority of us do have some kind of accent, myself included, I don’t think that is majority of New Yorkers speak funny English. U.S. is a melting pot and NYC is at the forefront of it all. I am glad they feel the pro side of having in flux of people living in the same city, that is exactly why we love our city too.
In the end I am still curious what a superstar designer’s life overseas is like. Most importantly does it come with a hefty paycheck?
