Do You See Bicycle In Your Future?

Not as a sport but as transportation. No, we are not trying to replace China as the city of bike rider. Rather consider it as an alternative to a lot of our traffic problems in the city.

It is spring, folks are getting out their dusty bike and rode around the city, enjoying their new found popularity, spear headed by the current administration. There were added bike lanes. More bike racks for storage. New bike shops opens up all over the city. Yet we were told better enjoy the moment while it lasted.

The word from the media was that the current administration’s friendliness towards bikes and pedestrians is not going to last because the next administration will do away with it.

Secondly, the media also quoted that some business think it is insane, they think the administration does not want any one to have a car in NYC, and that also affecting their business.

Wait a minute, did any of these business owners drove to their work place daily? Did they even understand how impossible, and expensive to park a vehicle in the city? Most of us took public transport or walk to work? How could more pedestrians hurt their business? There are still public transportation, and Taxi around. As for deliveries, they always find ways to get the good delivered. Please enlighten me.

Advantages out weight disadvantages for being a bike friendly city, it will easy traffic congestion. It can help ease air population. Provide more exercise for citizen who wanted to bike. Less traffic accident will likely to occur. It is an all around win win situation. Not to mention how spectacular it is to bike right up to the pier on the Hudson to watch the sunset. Instead of parking miles away, pay for parking and then walk there.

The pending fare increases and service cut by our MTA, give us more reasons to consider biking to work as an alternative. As a matter of fact, some of the environmentally responsible corporations had program already in place to promote aggressive bike use. Bike to work not only reduce consumption of gasoline, it also translate to more real cash in your pocket.

Am I a bike advocate? I do not own a bike, if I bike to work, the chances of me causing an accident is far greater than you skip your morning coffee. Since most of us do not skip our morning ritual. You know what the answer will be. However that does not stop me from lending my support to those who do.
