News of bomb found on Times Square echo all over the world within minutes it happened, it is a constant reminder that how vulnerable we are living in New York City, the most favorite target for the terrorists.
It was a miracle no one was hurt, Time Square was evacuated Swiftly and orderly. That should be credited to all the police and law enforcement agencies. Their training and coordination effort pays off.
In the last couple of months, I saw the increase of police presence in the subway station in Times Square, as well as on the street level. While the increased security is a great move, and necessary, we should credit the city on the excellent job on the ad campaign, telling citizen to be aware of any suspicious circumstances, and alert police, as in this recent case.
No matter how much law enforcement presence, the show of force may discourage terrorists to carry out an attack. However if you examine all the cases of suicide bombings all over the world, these kinds of activities are almost impossible for law enforcement to detect over a vast busy area like Time Square. Perhaps this is a lesson for all of us, who live and breath the city to be more vigilant of our surroundings. That does not means you have to examine everyone passes by you. That is people watching, entirely different category than this one, and you know what I meant.
On the flip side, I believe it is pure luck we have escaped a devastating disaster only because the bomb was poorly made. Otherwise the bomb would have gone off before anyone even realizes the existence of the vehicle that carries the bomb. Do you think our security failed in this regards?
The Street vender on the other hand should be credit with this quick thinking and call the police. Even though the smoke warning was unusual, because the bomb would have discharged without warning.
Unfortunately we got caught up with the media hype, try to recognize the heroes that saved us. Come to public security after 911 is not about recognize the heroes, it is our responsibility as New Yorkers, to ensure the city is safe not only for our sake, but also for our visitors flock to our famous city to enjoy all that we have to offer.
Care to share your thoughts.
